Not only for professional slant artists - Knee grinders from TecBike

Once the rapid chase through the bends has been opened up for the professionals, the sparks can literally fly. Kneepads are indispensable helpers, not only for the next training session, but also in competitions.

Nowadays, leather suits are more and more often equipped with these "plastic knobs" on the knee by the manufacturer. Since they make less sense in normal road traffic, the pads can be removed for everyday use thanks to the well adhering Velcro fasteners. To protect these connections from dirt and moisture, some manufacturers also offer special leather covers.

The two categories of slanting professionals

Every biker cultivates his or her very own riding style. This also applies to professionals on the race tracks. While one category of bikers gently feel the ground with their knee, the other uses the flooring to really lean on during the ride. With the knee they control their slides. So a high wear of the knee sliders is not surprising. These riders usually prefer hard pads. Although they glide less smoothly, they interlock less in the asphalt even under high pressure.

It's a different story with the first group of drivers. They usually prefer knee pads made of a softer material that is softer to the ground and also makes less noise.

Hanging-off: The intended contact with the asphalt

The term "hanging-off" is probably well known to most bikers. There is a special technique behind this term: the rider shifts his weight during cornering in such a way that he almost hangs next to his bike. Because notice: Without the "hang-man" there is also no unmistakable grinding noise. This is also the first and most important rule. After all, driving skills are much more important than the actual sanding.

If you touch the asphalt with your knee without falling off the bike, this is called a kneedownor kneeslide.

The way to the right Hanging-off

The most important thing first: Always stay relaxed. In order to make the hanging-off work, it is important not to sit uptight on the trestle. The footrests are located under the balls of your feet or even under your toes. This gives a better feeling for a sporty driving style.

As you can probably imagine, it is not enough tosimply stretch yourknee to the side for the hanging-off in a sloping position. On the seat you slide to the inside of the curve until you are sitting with only one buttock. Very important: You don't do that IN the curve, but BEFORE. This way you prepare yourself for the curve. If you carry out this action at the beginning of the curve, it could lead to unrest in the chassis. Of course, it is the same in exchange rate curves.

For a safe ride it is important to practice this. This works best on a straight line or at moderate speeds in easy curves. If it feels unfamiliar or even strange at the beginning, this is completely normal.

One of the most common mistakes is trying to balance the lateral weight with the upper body. This is done by pushing the upper body against the curve. By the way, this is one of the reasons why riders do not manage to get their knee on the ground. During the ride the bike is so stable that this intended weight shift is no problem. But it is a matter of getting used to it.

Eyes and upper body posture

The speed and the line are important factors. To approach you, you should increase the speed slowly. For a kneedown, upper body posture and line of sight are two points that should not be underestimated. Your gaze goes far into the bend and doesn't "stick" just before the front wheel. Since this is an important basic rule of motorcycling, this should actually be self-evident. With the upper body you do not "work" against the weight shift. You use it to strengthen it even more.

An important tip: If you are practicing with your toes first instead of your knee (we recommend toe pickers for your boots), place your foot further back on the footrest.

What types of knee sanders are available?

Plastic, carbon, wood, leather or even ceramic - different manufacturers use different materials. Each type of grinder has its own characteristics. Please note: noise and wear depend to a large extent on the condition of the track. Very often plastic is used for the production of the grinders and the respective types are not only available in round or kidney shape, but also in different thicknesses and hardnesses.

Grinders with metal inserts create a showy spark. This can, however, lead to obstructions for those driving behind. Therefore these knee polishers should be worn for show purposes only.

In order to ensure the safety of all riders, the MotoGP rulebook has been adapted for the 2020 season. Also affected by the new regulations are the knee polishers. If the pads contain metal inserts, they will spark when they come into contact with the asphalt. They are therefore prohibited in order to avoid visual impairment of the following drivers.

What should you pay attention to when buying?

Which knee polisher from our range suits you best depends on your driving style. We recommend that beginners start with larger pads. Also with the thickness it may be a little more. The considerably larger sanding surface reduces the risk of damaging the combination. At the same time the risk of injuring the leg is also lower. If the knee sander is also thicker, it will make contact with the ground more quickly when inclined. This in turn is advantageous for beginners. After some practice, the sander will show you exactly where you are coming up in the curve. Accordingly, you can choose the following pair a little smaller or a different shape.
