Motorcycle parts - From oil filter to chain set to shift holder

In order to transfer the engine power to the rear wheel and thus to the road, three types of drive have proven to be effective for motorcycles: Chain, shaft and timing belt. Our shop offers you a large selection of drive systems. Coloured motorcycle chains belong to our high-quality assortment as well as chain wheels, oil filters, oil drain plugs, oil filler plugs and air filters.

The classic drive - the chain

The chain drive convinces with a simple and manageable construction. The acquisition costs for a chain are comparatively low. It can be changed quickly if necessary and is lightweight. This is an important criterion especially for racing. On the other hand, it requires a lot of maintenance. At regular intervals it must not only be cleaned, but also checked for functionality. In addition, chains tend to dirty the motorcycles.

Care and maintenance of the chain

There is almost no motorcycle division in which this drive would not be found. From the fast sportsman to the good-natured cruiser it is used. For the longest possible life time a constant control is necessary. Regular lubrication with a special chain grease is necessary. To ensure that it is properly seated and sufficiently tightened, a sag check is also regularly included in the maintenance schedule. If necessary you should readjust it. If you have covered about 20,000 km with it, not only a chain change is necessary, but also a replacement of sprocket and sprocket.

Change chain set - high-quality spare and tuning parts from TecBike

Even if the permanent maintenance of the chains delays the change, there comes a time when the chain set must be replaced anyway. If the drive chain can be lifted by more than half a tooth height at the rearmost point and the teeth of the sprockets become sharp, the end of the life of these components is imminent. The chain tensioner can provide a further indication if it is at the rear end of the scale. Normally, sprockets and chains are subject to simultaneous wear. Therefore they are usually replaced together. If you combine old and new parts together, this can lead to rapid wear and tear.

What do you need to change your chain set? A well-assorted toolbox and the right special tool are helpful. Depending on the bike, you will need the following in addition to the chain kit

  • a nut for the rear axle nut,
  • Open-end wrench for lock nuts and chain tensioning bolts,
  • a torque wrench (up to at least 120 Nm),
  • Allen wrench,
  • for the sprocket nut a nut with extension to the torque wrench,
  • a nut for the collar nut on the rear sprocket,
  • Cutting and riveting tool for the chain,
  • a medium hammer and a small chisel

Cleaning agents, for example WD-40 and/or brake cleaner, several cloths as well as rolling bearing grease for the splines of the gearbox output shaft should be within easy reach. To open the pinion nut, an impact wrench can be helpful.

With a little manual skill and detailed instructions, even untrained screwdrivers can change the motorcycle chain. You will find the right tool in our shop.

The cardan shaft - are you still taking care of it or are you already driving?

In contrast to the chain drive, the cardan shaft has a very long service life and requires very little maintenance. The power is transmitted via a cardan shaft to the rear wheel. The complex construction is located in a completely closed housing. The rear wheel of your motorcycle remains clean. As with all things, there is a flip side to the coin with the cardan shaft. The easy to maintain and very clean propeller shaft drive system is very heavy and costs power. That is why this drive is mostly found in high-capacity cruisers and tourers. Except for the sport models and the motorcycles with smaller displacement, all bikes of the brand BMW are equipped with it. The Italian manufacturer Moto Guzzi also swears by the cardan drive.

The maintenance is very easy. Usually an oil change at regular intervals is sufficient. If the seals fail or individual components have to be replaced, this is quickly associated with corresponding costs.

All good things come in threes - The timing belt for motorcycles

In principle, the timing belt works like the chain drive. However, a toothed belt is used here instead of a chain. The system requires little maintenance and you do not need any additional lubricants. It also scores with a long service life. In contrast to this, it requires a comparatively high amount of space. Replacement is quite complicated and it is time-consuming to adjust the belts correctly.

It is not necessary to lubricate the timing belt. You should check the tension at regular intervals. Every 40,000 km an exchange is planned. The swing arm must be removed for this.
