Motorcycle air filter / Pipercross air filter

In order for a combustion engine to function smoothly, it needs not only the right fuel but also sufficient air. This is where the motorcycle air filter comes into play. It regulates how much "breathing air" the engine gets from your motorcycle. This in turn influences the performance of the machine. At the latest when you feel a decrease here, the time has come to clean or replace the air filter. Even if the power unit stutters or runs unsteadily, a dirty air filter can be the cause. In the TecBike Shop you will find a large selection of replacement air filtersfrom Pipercross.

Pipercross air filters - the lungs of the engine

For more than 25 years Pipercross has been developing and producing air filters for international motorsport and for the domestic market. The company itself is based in Northampton, England.

Pipercross Performance Air Filters are oil free replacement air filters that provide up to 40 percent higher airflow compared to an equivalent paper filter insert.

Oil free Pipercross air filters - can this work at all?

Normally, the medium cotton gauze is used for the production of replacement air filters. If this material were used without oil, it would indeed only have a limited filtering effect. The British manufacturer takes a different approach. Its air filters consist of a multi-layer polyurethane composite specially developed for Pipercross. In combination with years of development experience, it was possible to develop and optimize oil-free air filters for motorcycles. This way, these products not only ensure maximum torque, they also optimally protect the engine of your machine.

Avoid expensive repairs

Over time, oil vapours can literally burn onto the hot film element. This not only causes a possible falsification of measured values, it can also lead to a failure of the LFM. With a Pipercross air filter, for example a sportair filter, you avoid such damage and expensive repairs.

What is the technology behind the original and replacement air filters?

The heart of the replacement and sport air filters from Pipercross is a special foam made of polyurethane. It serves as a filter medium and offers a longer service life compared to classic paper.

For the production, this foam is first generated in a chemical reaction. The manufacturer then places it in a combustion chamber filled with gas. With the help of a controlled explosion, the cell walls burn off, creating a skeleton-like cell structure. This enables the special material to absorb impurities from the air with its smallest and open cells.

Changing the air filter - this is how it's done

Is fuel consumption rising or is the engine running out of round? The cause may be adirty air filter and it is time to replace this component on the motorcycle.

Which tool you need to change a Pipercross air filter, for example, depends on the motorcycle. While the removal of some models is possible without any tools at all, others require a lot of screwing. With a complete set of on-board tools, all work can usually be carried out to access the air filter box.

The removal

Mostly the tank and the seat have to be removed to get to the air filter. Don't forget to close the fuel tap before removing the tank. If your bike is equipped with a membrane fuel tap, this is not necessary. Then unscrew the cover of the air filter box to remove the filter element. By the way, some air filters are not accessible from the top but from the side.

The cleaning

Depending on the model, the intake ducts are fitted with a protective grille. On most machines, however, these channels are exposed. To prevent screws, small parts or dirt from getting into the intake duct, seal it with a rag. Caution, do not forget the rag when reassembling!

Dry air filters are always cleaned of dirt from the inside out. This is best done with compressed air. If you don't have your own compressor, you can get one at the nearest gas station. If neither of these is possible, knock the air filter element out with the outside facing downwards on the edge of a table. This way you remove the coarse dirt. If the motorcycle air filter has already been in use for several hours and/or is completely dirty, a replacement air filter is necessary.

Rub the housing of the air filter with an oil-wetted cloth. This ensures that dirt particles also stick to the housing wall. You have clogged the intake ducts with a rag? Then remove it and make sure that all gaskets on the cover and the air filter housing are correctly seated.

The installation

Not only with a Pipercross air filter it is essential to pay attention to the installation direction. After assembling the filter housing, you should also check the intake manifolds to see if they are seated correctly or if there are any cracks. If the drive unit draws secondary air, the mixture will lean and engine damage is imminent.

Under the seat, space for extra rags or tools is usually at a premium. Nevertheless, it is often tempting to use it up to the farthest corner. In many cases this then clogs intake ducts. The result: too little intake air leads to "overgreasing" of the fuel mixture. The fuel consumption increases and the throttle response is often reluctant.

Wet and dry air filters

Wet anddry air filters have become established in motorcycle construction. Off-road motorcycles and enduros are usuallyequippedwith wet air filters. They retain the finest dirt better and can be cleaned more frequently. When used on dusty roads or off-road, this is necessary every 1,000 to 2,000 kilometres. For cleaning, you can use special cleaning sets, or alternatively cold cleaner or washing-up liquid. Because of the oil residues, the dirty waste water must not be discharged into the drain. Instead, take it to the petrol station or to the nearest environmental mobile. After cleaning, blow out the filter thoroughly with compressed air or allow it to dry completely. Before you install it, the now dry filter must be re-soaked with a special air filter oil. Wring out any excess oil by hand.
