Motorcycle license plate holder & license plate lights

Motorcycle license plate

For many bikers, attaching a license plate to their machine is a necessary evil. This may also be due to the fact that the regulations in Germany allow comparatively little flexibility in this respect. In this country, own names, designs or mottos on the plates are not allowed, since such a creative freedom is not desired in the matter of motor vehicle registration plates. The license plate for the motorcycle is issued like the car counterpart by the responsible car registration office.

A look back in history

At the latest since motor vehicles have been manufactured industrially on a large scale, license plates have become a must for every motor vehicle. Until the 1950s, motorcycle license plates were attached to the front fender lengthwise to the direction of travel. This first form could, however, pose a danger to other road users. Therefore it was replaced by the modern version as it is known today. Vintage cars from the time before the change are still allowed to use the historic number plates.

The current license plates are, just like the plates in the passenger car sector, so-called EU license plates. On the left side there is a blue area with the respective country code and above it the Europe symbol made of stars. For a long time, the size of the plates caused displeasure among motorcycle enthusiasts and mocking terms like "cake plate" were circulating. In April 2011, the frequently demanded change in the signage in the Vehicle Registration Ordinance (FZV) came about. From now on, it allowed a reduction in the size of the number plates and a smaller font size. The following dimensions are valid since then:

  • Height: 20 cm
  • Width: 18 cm to 22 cm (4 or 5 characters)

For two-line license plates a maximum width of up to 28 cm is still allowed. Prerequisite for this: characters in conventional size are used. Furthermore you need a suitable license plate light and a suitable motorcycle reflector.

Season license plate for your motorcycle

In most cases the machines are only operated during the summer half year. In this case a so-called seasonal license plate is recommended. The registration and deregistration at the beginning and end of the season (for example from March to November) is automatic. This not only saves you the trip to the registration office, it also reduces the insurance costs. The registration period is limited to a minimum of 2 to a maximum of 11 months.

For a safe mounting of the license plate holder

However, the legal regulations are not limited to the size of the motorcycle license plates. There are also strict regulations for mounting on the motorcycle, which you must comply with.

In our shop you will find license plate holders suitable for the most common motorcycle brands. Especially practical are complete sets, which contain license plate holders, reflectors and the necessary mounting material. In our assortment you will find license plate holders for streetfighters, sportsmen or naked bikes with different cubic capacities. The range is completed by reflectors and license plate screws with and without caps in the colours blue, white and black. In the category license plate light you can expect high-quality LED lights (ECE approved) in different versions. For maximum light output, low power consumption and a compact design, modern LED technology is used for these products. With accessories such as adapter cables or adhesive strips, you can mount the lights optimally and safely in the permissible position.
