Flashing signposts - a quick glance at the legal possibilities

Today it is hard to imagine, but in the early years of road traffic, the hand was the first means of indicating a change of direction with the motorcycle. With increasing traffic density, it became necessary over time to use direction change indicators that could be seen at all times. On 1 January, the law officially introduced the compulsory flashing of direction indicators.

Not only the taste of the bikers changed in the course of the time, also the technology developed further. Halogen lamps and, more recently, LEDs conquered the market in no time at all. Light emitting diodes are the current state of the art. Thanks to their small size and weight and the choice between black or clear turn signal lenses, you can even play a real hide-and-seek game around these stylish lamps with the blessing of the authorities.

Light sources for changing direction are among the safety-relevant components on a bike. In order to put a happy smile on the inspector's face during your visit during the next general inspection, not only a test mark is required. The minimum distances between the indicators or to the headlamp must also be observed.

One turn signal system flashes - logical. This is his job. In order for the inspector to accept your conversion with satisfaction, the correct flashing frequency, i.e. the frequency with which the bulb lights up during a fixed defined time, is important. Especially when converting from power-hungry light bulbs to the "power-saving foxes" with LED technology, this can quickly become a stumbling block.

What is the reason for this? The original turn signal system is designed for the load which is caused by the operation with conventional bulbs. LEDs, on the other hand, require only a fraction of the amount of current, although they shine much brighter. The system is therefore no longer able to work correctly. To avoid this, you have two possibilities. Either you connect suitable resistors in between or you simply choose the appropriate flasher relay for your machine from our range.

Conversion made easy

The winker conversion is no big deal. The work can be carried out in your home garage without any problems. If the turn signals can be changed by plug and play, the conversion is even easier. If the smart direction change indicators are to be placed in a different location, it may be necessary to extend the existing cables. High-quality (waterproof) cable connectors are practical helpers to carry out this work.
