Modern license plate illumination for your bike - are light emitting diodes allowed?

Anyone who wants to take part in road traffic with his or her two-wheeler and ride it safely must comply with the legal requirements. Only if a motorcycle has the lighting prescribed by the STVzo will it receive a TÜV badge. A prerequisite for this is of course that all other relevant areas also comply with the regulations. The lighting also includes the lights for license plates. Bicycles with auxiliary motors, wheelchairs with electric motors and mopeds are excluded from this regulation according to the STVzo.

In order to illuminate the number plate correctly, it is not sufficient to simply fit a rear light above the registration plate. As a rule, it is not capable of shining down on the license plate. The situation is different if the manufacturer has integrated an approved and type-approved license plate light. On these models, there is a clear and transparent surface in the lower part of the rear lamp. This transparent part allows the light of the light sources to shine onto the license plate.

In order to avoid dazzling the following traffic, it is only allowed to illuminate the license plate itself. The regulations also stipulate that if the headlights and reflectors are switched on for driving, the license plate illumination must also be in operation. In the meantime you have a free choice of lights. According to your personal taste and the style of your bike, you can install lighting with classic bulbs, xenon light or LED lights. It is important that the bulbs are not coloured, for example red or blue.

The minimum or maximum height of the lighting is determined by the specifications on how the license plate is to be mounted. The distance of the lower edge to the ground must be at least 30 cm. The maximum height is 120 cm. The regulations also stipulate that installation may only take place at a maximum angle of up to 30 degrees.

Compared to conventional lamps, they require considerably less power. Temperature fluctuations or vibrations can do little harm to them. This minimises the risk of the lighting system failing. The weight and the small space requirement are also factors that should not be neglected. Here again, a comparison with the conventional bulb is worthwhile. Light-emitting diodes, or LEDs for short, only require a fraction of the space required by the bulb and thus allow very compact and discreet designs that can be harmoniously integrated into both classic bikes and ultra-modern designs. If required, LEDs can even be "hidden" so that they are only visible at second glance. An excellent example of this is our bar end indicators.

The installation of our license plate light can be done by yourself without any previous knowledge. Only two cables are needed for the connection. For the mounting you have the choice
