How to avoid tripping hazards at the TÜV

No matter whether you own a beautiful oldtimer, drive a youngtimer or maybe you prefer to use the latest technology and designs: When converting the machines, it is important to adhere to the specifications of the TÜV and the Road Traffic Licensing Regulations (StVZO). If you make so-called "essential changes with regard to engine tuning or safety-relevant assemblies", approval by the responsible authorities is indispensable. If this approval is not granted and the vehicle is nevertheless operated in road traffic, the type approval expires.

In order for such far-reaching modifications to be approved, you will need appropriate certificates and/or test certificates. Furthermore a proper installation is of course required.

Make it easy for yourself with high-quality spare parts and add-on parts from TECbike

If the desired/required components have a general type approval, ABE for short, or a so-called KBA number (Federal Motor Transport Authority), they have already been subjected to a test. If an E-mark is affixed to the component, it certifies a test at European level. These test marks make a TÜV visit superfluous.

So that the operating license is really maintained, there are two things to consider. On the one hand, a correct installation according to the documentation is absolutely necessary. On the other hand, the test mark is actually only valid for installation on a motorcycle in series production. This rules out wild combinations in advance.

This is permitted for the wheel, rims and wheel cover

You want to really make a lot of money with really fat rims? Or should it rather be a racy supermoto conversion? With a corresponding expert opinion you can of course make these dreams come true.

For machines that have an EC approval, there are no longer any specific dimensions for wheel covers. However, a "sufficient cover" is mandatory. Thus, the legislator excludes that your bike endangers other road users. So before you boldly apply the flex, we recommend that you consult your responsible inspector. Or simply choose a high quality rear wheel cover from our shop to replace the old model.

The lower edge of the wheel cover may end a maximum of 150 mm above the middle of the rear wheel axle on machines with StVZO approval. A complete covering of the tread is also required. Please note that this value must be determined in the sprung out and unloaded condition.

With their long suspension travel, Enduros therefore often have additional covers in the area of the wheel cover. In general, a rear reflector with test mark is required and may be mounted at a maximum height of 900 millimetres above the ground.
