Exhaust Insulation wool & Insulation mats

An exhaust must meet high requirements. Among other things, it must comply with the legal requirements regarding noise emissions. Nevertheless, a pithy sound should not be missing. Like the series products, retrofit silencers must also comply with the legal requirements. To ensure that this is the case, exhaust manufacturers use, among other things, insulating wool and mats. In our TECbike-Shop you can get

  • compressed insulation mats and
  • loose insulation wool.

How is a motorcycle exhaust system constructed?

Regardless of whether it is a standard exhaust system or a retrofit silencer, the exhaust is used for noise reduction and of course for the removal of the combustion gases. In four-stroke engines, they also make an important contribution to optimum gas exchange and thus play a decisive role in performance. A basic distinction is made between so-called absorption dampers and reflection dampers.

The absorption silencer

The absorption damper has proven itself in practice. As the name already suggests, the sound insulation is achieved by absorbing the sound energy. For this purpose, this silencer only has a continuous pipe and a shell. The exhaust pipe is perforated. Between it and the sleeve, the manufacturer shall place a suitable insulating material, for example

  • Exhaust wool on fiberglass basis,
  • Rock wool or
  • Stainless steel wool

one. The resulting sound energy passes through the perforated pipe during operation. Insulating mats or the exhaust pipe insulation wool absorb this energy, absorbing it and converting it into heat. It is therefore important that the material is heat resistant. Due to its design, the absorber causes significantly less back pressure. This can lead to an increase in performance, especially in supercharged vehicles. Absorption dampers primarily dampen high frequencies. The systems inspire with a dull and pithy sound. Therefore this type of dampers is very popular among tuning fans.

Its advantages are obvious: The production is inexpensive and the dampers are lightweight. Like all things this system has one or two disadvantages. The material is exposed to high stresses during use. It ages and the damping decreases over time. Especially with demanding motocross machines and enduros, regular replacement of the exhaust wool is necessary.

Design and function of the reflective silencer

Several chambers are connected to each other with tubes. Part of the sound energy is already lost during propagation in the large chamber. During propagation into the other chambers, multiple reflections occur on the chamber walls. Due to phase inversions, the sound in the resonance chambers virtually cancels itself out. The advantage of these systems: constant damping. However, they are expensive and much heavier than absorption dampers.

A mixture of both systems is often used in series vehicles: In many cases, the front silencer consists of an absorption silencer. A reflection damper serves as a rear silencer. This makes it possible to achieve a very high level of sound attenuation.

Exhaust wool loose and insulating mats for rear silencer

In our assortment you will find high-quality and loose insulation material for the exhaust system of your motorcycle. It is heat resistant up to 1.000 °C. The insulation wool of the universal mats is compressed. At low temperature the fine yarn dissolves. The compressed fibres unfold and fill the chamber optimally. In this way even uneven mufflers can be optimally plugged. Furthermore, the mats convince with an uncomplicated installation: Simply adjust to the desired length and lay around the perforated pipe.
