Motorcycle brake pads and the ABS (Antilock Braking System)
Since 2017, the ABS obligation has also applied to motorcycles. This system is an electronic device. When you brake, it prevents wheels from locking. A sensor measures the wheel revolutions for this purpose. The values between rear and front wheel are adjusted. If the number of revolutions is too low, the computer releases the brake pressure. The wheel turns again.
Our product range offers you brake pads for the street with ABE or pads which are exclusively designed for the race track and have no street approval. Basically a distinction is made between organic and sintered surfaces. Both variants contain metals. They provide the friction coefficient. Suitable lubricants provide braking stability. Also included are abrasives for cleaning the motorcycle brake discs.
The difference between the two types can be seen in the manufacturing process. The components of the organic pads are bound in temperature-resistant synthetic or natural resins. Sintering, i.e. pressing the components at very high temperatures, gives the sintered linings their name.
Important: Organic pads must be run in carefully and gently so that they adapt to the brake discs. If you put too much strain on new pads, the resin will burn and the pad will vitrify. Sintered pads, on the other hand, can be fully loaded after only a short running-in period.
The brake fluid - powerful pressure finely dosed
If you pull the brake lever of the motorcycle, you exert pressure. The brake fluid transmits the pressure via the brake pump to the brake piston. The glycol-based fluid is specified according to DOT classes (short for United States Department of Transportation). Among other things, they define the boiling point. DOT 4 is used for most motorcycles, DOT 3 and DOT 5.1 are also possible and they can be mixed together. Silicone-based brake fluids (DOT 5) are an exception. Under no circumstances may DOT 5 be mixed with the other variants.
The hydraulic fluid attracts water. Regular replacement is therefore necessary to prevent brake failure. You can see whether there are still sufficient quantities of fluid in the system by looking at the brake fluid reservoir. For a very individual look, you will find high quality caps for the expansion tanks of your bike.
For the right bite: brake line, brake calipers and calipers
The lines are available as rubber and steel flex lines. The rubber variant convinces with a favourable production price. However, you should maintain them regularly. With increasing aging they expand. Therefore they should be replaced every 5 years. With higher production costs, the steel flex line is significantly more expensive. In contrast to the rubber line it does not age. It has a clearly defined pressure point, which remains unchanged even after several years of use. For a longer durability they are often teflon-coated on the inside.
These components usually consist of an aluminium alloy. A distinction is made between fixed and floating calipers. The fixed caliper is mounted immovably on the fork. There are brake pistons on both sides of the brake discs. This design is available with 2, 4 or 6 pistons.
A floating caliper is attached to the fork in such a way that it can be moved (floats) on at least 2 pins parallel to the wheel axle. Brake pistons are only present on the outside of the brake disc. If you reduce the pressure in the hydraulic system with both designs, a sealing ring pulls the pistons back to their initial position.
Motorcycle brakes: Brembo brake discs for your bike
This is the wheel-side part of a disc brake for motorcycles. It converts the kinetic energy generated during braking into heat and thus achieves vehicle deceleration. Brake discs consist of the braking surface and a carrier. It connects the hub with the disc.
Since very high temperatures are reached during intensive use, the discs are perforated. This saves weight and provides better cooling. Carbon fibre discs are a special feature. They only achieve a good coefficient of friction from temperatures of 200 to 300 °C. They are not suitable for rain races or road traffic.
