Obligation to register:

• Simple license plate holders without additional functions are generally not subject to registration as long as they comply with the legal requirements.
• If the license plate holder has additional features such as integrated lighting or special blinker brackets, these parts may need to have type approval or be approved by a testing organization such as TÜV or DEKRA.

Testing and approval:

• Modifications to the motorcycle that may affect road safety must be approved by a testing organization. This also applies to the license plate holder if it is fitted to the bike in combination with other modifications.

Penalties for non-compliance:

• An unapproved or incorrectly fitted license plate holder can result in a fine and, in the worst case, points in Flensburg. In addition, the operating license for your motorcycle may expire, which means that you are no longer legally allowed to ride on public roads.

Many people opt for the 180 x 200 mm size for their motorcycle license plate, and there are several good reasons for this. Here are the most important ones:

Compact size: the 180 x 200 mm dimensions are compact and fit most motorcycles well. They offer enough space to display all the necessary information legibly without appearing too large and bulky. This size blends in better with the overall appearance of the motorcycle.

Appearance and aesthetics: Many motorcyclists attach great importance to the aesthetics of their bike. A smaller license plate often looks sportier and more stylish. It disturbs the design and lines of the motorcycle less, which is particularly important for sporty and custom bikes.

Legal requirements:

The 180 x 200 mm size meets the legal requirements for license plates in Germany. It is large enough to clearly display all the prescribed information (such as the letter and number combination, the registration date and the license plate of origin), which ensures legibility by other road users and monitoring systems.

Are short license plates allowed on motorcycles?

Since April 2011, license plates have been issued for motorcyclists in widths of 180, 200 and 220 millimetres and a height of 200 millimetres. A short license plate looks nicer, especially if you want to keep your rear end clean. You can therefore easily exchange your old large motorcycle license plate for a new short one. Please bear in mind that on the particularly narrow plates, which are only 180 millimetres wide, there can be no more than two digits for two letters, i.e. no more than four characters after the registration district. For longer combinations, you therefore have to use a larger width. For example, if you want to exchange a combination with six digits after the city abbreviation, you will receive a new, shorter license plate combination. Reason: Even with the 220 millimeter wide new license plate, a maximum of five digits in total are possible behind the location abbreviation.

Folding motorcycle license plate holder

But beware: In normal road traffic in Germany, the license plate must always be clearly visible and firmly attached. According to legal regulations, seasonal license plates can also be issued as short license plates. You should always bear in mind that you will need additional space on the license plate if you specify the months. There is therefore less space available for the desired combination. Furthermore, there is usually no entitlement to a smaller license plate.

Furthermore, a check must be carried out for sufficient clearance, tightness and function in the unloaded and loaded state. To prevent bolts from loosening on their own, they must be secured with a suitable threadlocker. We recommend that you only carry out this work once you have completely fitted the bracket.
