For all motorcycle conversions, it is imperative to comply with the applicable guidelines and regulations. This applies especially to safety-relevant components such as brakes, suspension struts or the exhaust system. Even with minor modifications such as fancy LED indicators or a new rear light or mirrors, there are some things to consider. This is the only way to avoid unpleasant surprises at the next general inspection.

If it comes for example to performance increases or to substantial changes of safety-relevant building groups, you get the rebuilding measures only approved, if you can prove a proper assembly as well as present appropriate test certificates or attestations.

If the components have a General Operating License (ABE) or a KBA number (Kraftfahrtbundesamt), they have already been tested. An E-approval mark is thus comparable and certifies a test at European level. A visit to the TÜV becomes superfluous. Important: Only if all parts are correctly assembled, the operating permit is maintained. "Wild" combinations are therefore not permitted.

Replacing the boring and old brake lights with fancy tuning tail lights is not a witchcraft from a craftsman's point of view. Only lighting equipment with test marks may be installed. However, there are a lot of regulations regarding the number, height or distance of the components that you have to observe. There are serious differences between EG- and StVZO-approvals. According to StVZO you are allowed to mount at least one rear light and one brake light. According to EC, two brake lights are also allowed.

License plate illumination with LED

A bike without illumination of the license plate does not get a TÜV badge. It is not enough to simply attach the pure tail light above the license plate. You need an additional license plate light. The situation is different, if a license plate light, which is approved and type-approved by the manufacturer, is already integrated. They have a transparent and clear surface in the lower part, in order to emit the light onto the license plate. LED license plate lights convince with an extremely small construction. Since they have a very low power consumption compared to conventional illuminants, this puts less strain on the on-board electronics. They also score points with a very long service life.
