How does the brake pump work?

If you want to reduce the speed, you reduce the rotation of the wheel and therefore the brake disk. This is done via the brake pads. They generate the highest possible coefficient of friction and decelerate effectively.

A hydraulic system is used to press the brake pads onto the brake discs. It consists of the pump, the brake lines and the brake calliper. When you pull the brake lever, the force is transferred to the brake piston. It transfers the pressure to the brake fluid. The brake fluid cannot compress. It therefore transfers the pressure evenly and without loss to the brake pad piston. The pads press against the brake disk and the vehicle decelerates.

If the braking effect decreases, this is usually due to water or air that has built up in the system. In contrast to brake fluid, both can be compressed. What is the difference between radial and axial brake pumps?

The two designs do not differ in terms of braking effect. With the axial pump, the force is transmitted "across the corner". In practice, this means that the piston is located to the side of the brake lever. If you pull the lever, the piston is pressed sideways, i.e. axially.

A radial brake pump, for example from Brembo or Magura, on the other hand, transmits the force radially in relation to the anchor point of the pump on the handlebars. This means that the pulling force on the lever acts in the same direction as the lever on the piston. The advantages of these systems: Larger pistons can be used.
